Overview

The SRAM GX Eagle Transmission Flattop Chain is a 12-speed chain for SRAM's Eagle Transmission (T-Type) mountain-bike drivetrains. It has solid pins and 126 links, with nickel-plated outer links and chrome-hardened inner links. It is a performance-tier Transmission chain, built for everyday mountain-bike and e-MTB use.

Why we love it

We love that the GX Transmission chain gives you SRAM's tough Flattop mountain-bike chain at a sensible, everyday price.

  • 01It is built for SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type), so it drops straight into a modern direct-mount SRAM mountain-bike drivetrain.
  • 02Solid pins, nickel-plated outer links, and chrome-hardened inner links make it durable, and it is e-bike approved for e-MTB use.
  • 03It comes with the matching SRAM PowerLock connector, so you have what you need to install it.
Why it makes the cut. Hammer & Howl only carries parts we believe are among the best in the business. It keeps an Eagle Transmission bike shifting cleanly without the flagship price.

Warranty

SRAM publishes its written warranty, including what it covers and what it excludes, at sram.com/en/service/warranty. We will send you a free copy of that warranty on request. Email support@hammerandhowl.com or call (206) 420-9548.

What's included

  • One SRAM GX Eagle Transmission Flattop Chain (126 links)
  • One SRAM PowerLock connector, the matching quick link for this chain

Not included: A chain tool or master-link pliers. You size the chain to your drivetrain with a chain tool, then join it with the SRAM PowerLock in the box. Point the arrow on the PowerLock in the direction the chain travels. The PowerLock closes by hand and locks in place with a firm pedal stroke while you hold the rear brake, until it clicks. Removing the chain later needs master-link pliers. The PowerLock is single-use, so use a fresh one each time the chain is joined. Many home mechanics do this job; if you would rather not, any bike shop can install it for you.

Will it fit your bike?

Compatible with

  • SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed drivetrains, the direct-mount, hangerless mountain-bike system, including: XX SL, XX, X0, GX, and Eagle 90 and Eagle 70 Transmission groups
  • SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed drivetrains, the direct-mount, hangerless mountain-bike system, including: The e-bike (Eagle Powertrain and e-MTB) versions of Eagle Transmission
  • Any SRAM Eagle Transmission tier (a chain from one tier works on another; the tiers differ by weight, pin construction, and finish)

Not compatible with

  • SRAM Eagle 12-speed drivetrains that are not Transmission (NX, GX, X01, or XX1 Eagle and other hanger-mounted Eagle groups), which use a SRAM Eagle chain, a different chain
  • SRAM 12-speed Flattop road drivetrains (RED, Force, Rival, or Apex eTap AXS): the road Flattop chain looks similar but is a road-specific chain and does not interchange
  • 10-speed, 11-speed, and non-SRAM drivetrains

Confirm before ordering

This is the chain for a SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) drivetrain. If you are not sure whether your bike is Eagle Transmission, check for the hangerless, bolt-on rear derailleur. You can also confirm with your bike mechanic or Hammer & Howl before ordering.

SRAM's Eagle Transmission, also called T-Type, is the direct-mount mountain-bike drivetrain that bolts on without a derailleur hanger, and this Flattop chain is made for it. It shares the flat-top look of a SRAM road Flattop chain but is not the same part. The road chain is made for a road drivetrain, and the two do not interchange. It is also different from a standard SRAM Eagle chain, which fits a hanger-mounted Eagle drivetrain. Match the chain to your drivetrain, and any Eagle Transmission tier will fit. Watch the names: X0 and XX Transmission are different parts from X01 and XX1 Eagle, and GX Eagle Transmission is a different drivetrain from GX Eagle.

Questions

Will it work on my standard Eagle drivetrain, like NX, GX, X01, or XX1 Eagle?

No. Those are hanger-mounted SRAM Eagle drivetrains, and they use a standard SRAM Eagle chain, not this one. This is an Eagle Transmission (T-Type) chain, made for SRAM's direct-mount Transmission system. Match the chain to your drivetrain.

Which Eagle Transmission drivetrains does it fit?

It fits SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed drivetrains: XX SL, XX, X0, GX, and Eagle 90 and Eagle 70 Transmission, including the Eagle Powertrain e-MTB versions. Any Transmission tier works with any Transmission chain, so you can move between tiers and keep the fit.

Is this the same as a SRAM road Flattop chain?

No. A SRAM road Flattop chain (for RED, Force, Rival, or Apex eTap AXS) shares the flat-top shape but is a road-specific chain, built differently for a road drivetrain. This one is made for a SRAM Eagle Transmission mountain-bike drivetrain, and the two do not interchange.

Can I use it on an e-bike or e-MTB?

Yes. The SRAM GX Eagle Transmission chain is e-bike approved, so it suits an Eagle Transmission e-MTB as well as a regular mountain bike. Keep it clean and check it for wear regularly, as an e-bike can wear a chain faster; replace it when it reaches the wear limit.

Does it come with a connector?

Yes. A SRAM PowerLock connector, the matching quick link for this GX Eagle Transmission chain, is in the box. You size the chain to length with a chain tool, then join it with the PowerLock, its arrow pointing in the direction the chain travels. It closes by hand and locks with a firm pedal stroke.

Can I reuse the PowerLock connector?

No. The SRAM PowerLock that comes with this GX Eagle Transmission chain is single-use. Once it has been closed, use a fresh PowerLock the next time the chain is joined, and use master-link pliers to open the old one. Reusing a connector risks a broken chain, so it is worth replacing each time.

What do I need to install it?

A chain tool to size the chain to your drivetrain, and the SRAM PowerLock in the box to join it. Set the PowerLock so its arrow points in the direction the chain travels; it closes by hand and locks with a firm pedal stroke. To take the chain off later you use master-link pliers, and you join it with a fresh PowerLock each time. If you would rather not install it yourself, any bike shop can.
