Privacy policy
Effective July 31, 2026. We have rewritten this page to describe how information actually moves through our store, including the parts handled by Shopify. We have also removed the Google & YouTube sales channel we previously used, so we no longer send Google information through that channel. We do not sell your information to data brokers. That is true of information we collected before today as well as information we collect from now on. This page also tells you what you can turn off, and what we cannot turn off for you.
Hammer & Howl is a small bicycle components shop in Seattle, Washington. This page covers what we collect, what we do with it, who else gets it, and what you can do about it. Some of what happens to your information is done by companies we do not control. They are named below.
What we collect
When you order: your name, email address, shipping and billing address, phone number if you give us one, what you bought, and confirmation that payment went through. Payment is taken through Shopify Payments. Your card details go to Shopify. We do not see or store your full card number.
If you sign up for our emails: your email address.
When you contact us by email or by phone: whatever you write or say, and the address or number you use.
When you visit the site: your IP address, an approximate location worked out from it, your browser and operating system, the pages and products you look at, and identifiers stored in cookies. This collection begins as soon as you open a page. What you can turn off is under Your choices.
Most of this you give us directly. The rest is collected automatically by the software that runs the store.
What we use it for
Filling and shipping your order. Taking payment. Handling returns and warranty claims. Answering your questions. Preventing fraud. Keeping the store working and improving how it works. Meeting our tax, accounting and legal obligations. And, if you ask for our emails, telling you about sales and new products.
Selling your information
No one pays us for your personal information, and we do not ask anyone to. We do not sell or rent customer lists or customer records to data brokers or list brokers.
One thing needs saying plainly. Shopify uses information about your activity here for the feature described below. Several state privacy laws define "sell" and "share" more broadly than most people would. Under those definitions, that use can count as a sale or a share, even though no money comes to us. We treat it that way, and the choices below are what we can actually offer.
Who else handles your information
Shopify. Our store runs on Shopify, so everything that passes through the store passes through Shopify. Shopify takes the payment through Shopify Payments. Shopify also provides the site search, some of our order fulfillment, and Shop Pay at checkout, so anything you give those goes to Shopify too. For most purposes Shopify acts on our instructions. But Shopify also runs a feature called Network Intelligence, which is switched on for this store. Under it, Shopify combines information about your activity here with information from other Shopify stores, and uses the result to improve its own products and to target advertising, both for us and for other merchants. Shopify says no other merchant can see your data. We have no way to inspect, audit or verify what Shopify does under Network Intelligence. We could switch it off. Doing so takes effect immediately and would stop the app that powers our search filters and product recommendations, our Shop sales channel, and the payment methods Shopify manages at our checkout, among other features. Shopify also says only that switching it off would stop it using new information from this store going forward, not that it would undo what has already been collected. If we do switch it off, we will change this page. Shopify explains its own practices for shoppers at shopify.com/legal/privacy/consumers.
Google. Until July 31, 2026 we used the Google & YouTube sales channel, which could send Google information about visitors to this site and could read our customer records. We removed it. When a channel is removed, Shopify sends its developer, in this case Google, a request to delete personal customer information. We cannot reach into Google's systems to confirm what it received, deletes, or still holds. Google's own settings at myadcenter.google.com control how Google uses information it has about you.
Getting your order to you. Your name, address and the contents of your order go to the delivery carrier, and to Shopify Fulfillment Network when we do not pack the order ourselves.
Our store's records are hosted in the United States. Shopify, Google and the other companies named here may still handle your information in other countries.
We also disclose information when the law requires it. If we ever sell or transfer the business, customer records would go with it, and we would require the buyer to keep the commitments on this page.
Shopify's checkout and Shop Pay can recognize you across other stores that use Shopify, and Network Intelligence combines your activity here with activity at other Shopify stores, both as covered above. Beyond that, with the Google channel removed, we do not knowingly have any tool on this site that collects what you do across other websites. If that changes, we will update this page.
Your choices
Stop the Shopify side of the sharing. Use the "Do not sell my personal information" link in the footer of our store pages. It tells Shopify to stop using your activity here for Network Intelligence advertising. We have that page switched on for shoppers in every US state and in Washington, DC, and, per its documentation, Shopify also acts on the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser sends one.
Shopify's documentation says the signal activates opting out of data sale or sharing or targeted advertising by Shopify and third parties wherever a store's data sharing opt-out page is in use; on our store, that is every US state and Washington, DC. If the page does not appear for you, or you are outside the United States, email support@hammerandhowl.com and we will do what is within our control, and reply, normally within 45 days, telling you what we did and what was not ours to do. Blocking or clearing cookies in your browser also limits what any tool on this site can collect.
Stop the emails. If you sign up for our emails, every one of them will carry an unsubscribe link.
See, correct or delete what we hold. Email support@hammerandhowl.com. We will confirm the request is really coming from you, then show you what we have, correct it, or delete it, normally within 45 days. Records of a completed order are the exception, because tax and accounting rules require us to keep those, and we will tell you if that applies to your request. We cannot reach into Shopify's or Google's systems on your behalf. We can pass a deletion request to Shopify, which says it will then remove your information from Network Intelligence.
Some states give their residents rights we have not listed here, such as receiving a copy of your information in a portable form. If you want something that is not on this page, email us. We will tell you whether we can do it, and if it is within our control and the exceptions above do not apply, we will. If we turn a request down, you can ask us to look again by replying to our answer, and we will normally respond within 60 days.
Do Not Track. Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal. There is no agreed meaning for it, and we do not change what we collect when we receive one. The Global Privacy Control signal is a different thing, and is covered above.
Children
This is a shop for people buying bicycle parts. We do not aim it at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top and post the new version here. If the change is significant, we will say what changed in the paragraph at the top.
