Overview

MSPEEDWAX Hot-Melt Chain Wax is a solid wax you melt in a pot and dip a stripped chain into. It is fully refined, lab-grade paraffin blended with two solid lubricants, tungsten disulfide (WS2) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and it carries no PFAS.

A 520 g container holds two 260 g pucks and waxes about 20 chains. The 1040 g size is two identical containers, four pucks, and waxes about 40. In dry road conditions a waxing covers about 350 to 400 miles. It is made in house in Shoreview, Minnesota, from ingredients sourced in the USA.

Why we love it

We love that waxing turns chain care from a weekly job into something you do a few times a season.

  • 01The wax goes on dry, so it does not hold road and trail grit the way a wet lube can, and the drivetrain stays clean.
  • 02One 520 g container waxes about 20 chains, and in dry conditions a waxing covers 350 to 400 miles, so one purchase lasts a long stretch of riding.
Why it makes the cut. Hammer & Howl only carries parts we believe are among the best in the business. Molten Speed Wax was founded in 2013 and makes its wax in house rather than outsourcing it. That is why we carry this over a general lubricant brand's version.

What's included

  • The size you select: one 520 g container holding two pucks, or two identical containers at 1040 g, holding four

Will it fit your bike?

Compatible with

  • Any bicycle chain: road, gravel, mountain, track and single speed
  • Every drivetrain brand and speed count, because wax is not a fitment part
  • Chains that have been stripped clean of factory grease or old lubricant

Not compatible with

  • Application on the bike. A submersion wax means the chain comes off each time.
  • Topping up a chain that carries a wet or drip lubricant

What matters is the chain's condition, not its brand. After the first strip, a training or everyday chain goes straight back in the pot with no degreasing in between. A chain kept for racing is cleaned again before each waxing.

Questions

Do I have to clean the chain first?

Yes, before the first waxing. Wax will not bond through factory grease or old oil, so a new chain has to be stripped back to bare metal. That is a series of solvent baths including an overnight soak. After that first strip a training chain goes straight back in the pot, and a chain kept for racing is cleaned again each time.

How often do I re-wax?

About every 350 to 400 miles in dry road conditions. Wet, muddy or gritty riding shortens that, so wax more often. When the chain starts to feel or sound dry, wax it again.

What is the difference between the two sizes?

Only how much wax you get. The 1040 g is two identical 520 g containers, four pucks in total. The wax, the pucks and the process are the same, so pick the size for how many chains you expect to wax.

Does it contain PFAS?

No. Neither does MSPEEDWAX Race Powder 63g, which uses the same two solid lubricants and states no PTFE.

Do I need the Race Powder as well?

No. MSPEEDWAX Race Powder 63g is a topical powder brushed onto a chain that is already waxed, as the last step before a race. It is an addition to hot-melt waxing, not a substitute for it.
