Its 11-44T cogset pairs with the Ingrid RD1 MK2 Rear Derailleur and with Shimano MTB (GS or SGS) derailleurs that can reach a 44-tooth cog. It works with 12-speed chains, including SRAM 12-speed (Flattop included) and other compatible 12-speed chains. For a SRAM XD driver, choose the Ingrid 12-Speed Cassette for SRAM XD instead.
Questions
How durable are the aluminum cogs?
Aluminum is less durable than steel, but it weighs less. Ingrid uses it only for the top two (largest) cogs, where the chain load is spread across the most teeth and each tooth carries less of it. Those two cogs are 7075-T6 aluminum, hardened with a hard-anodizing process for a tough, wear-resistant surface. The smaller, harder-working cogs are heat-treated AISI 9840 steel with a nickel-phosphorus plating. Because the cassette is machined in two parts, the steel section and the aluminum section are each available separately as spare parts. If one part wears, you can renew just that part rather than replace the whole cassette. As with any cassette, keep the chain clean and lubricated and replace it before it wears, since a worn chain wears the cogs faster.
How do I know if I have a Shimano HG freehub?
The easiest check is the smallest cog your current cassette can take. An 11-tooth or larger smallest cog means the HG (Hyperglide) freehub, which this cassette needs. A 10-tooth smallest cog means the newer Micro Spline or a SRAM XD driver, which it does not fit. Your wheel or hub maker's spec sheet lists the freehub type too.
Which derailleur works with this cassette?
It is built for a 12-speed single-chainring drivetrain. It pairs directly with the Ingrid RD1 MK2 Rear Derailleur, on the cage length that matches your cog range. Can I use a long cage derailleur with this cassette?
Yes. This cassette is 11-44T, well within a long cage's capacity, so a long-cage derailleur works with it. That includes the long-cage Ingrid RD1 MK2 Rear Derailleur that Hammer & Howl stocks. A short cage holds the chain a little more taut, so it runs quieter, shifts a touch crisper, and sits slightly higher for more ground clearance. A long cage is fully functional with a 44T cassette, and it lets you move to a larger cassette, up to 52T, later without changing the derailleur. The long cage does carry a little more chain slack on the 44T than on the 52T.
What if I have a SRAM XD driver instead?
Choose the Ingrid 12-Speed Cassette for SRAM XD, the same cassette built for a SRAM XD driver. It is the XD version of this 11-44T cassette, and it adds two larger cog ranges. Match the version to your freehub: HG here, SRAM XD there.
