Overview

The SILCA Pre-Waxed Race Chain is a genuine SRAM XX SL Eagle Transmission Flattop chain, for the mountain-bike drivetrain SRAM also calls T-Type. It arrives ready to race. SILCA takes the chain, strips off the factory grease, ultrasonically cleans it, then hot-melt waxes it with SILCA Secret Chain Blend. Size it to your drivetrain, fit it and ride.

Because it is already waxed, there is no degreasing to do and no first wax to melt at home. A waxed chain runs clean and quiet, and the dry wax does not hold onto grit the way a wet lube can.

Why we love it

We love that this chain gives you a fresh, race-ready drivetrain straight out of the box, with none of the mess of waxing a chain yourself.

  • 01It arrives stripped, cleaned and hot-melt waxed, so you install it and ride, with no degreasing.
  • 02The chain is SRAM's own XX SL Eagle Transmission Flattop chain, and SILCA's work is the wax on it, not the chain itself.
Why it makes the cut. Hammer & Howl only carries parts we believe are among the best in the business. Waxing a chain at home means solvent and a wax pot, and this one arrives with that already done, by the company that makes the wax.

Warranty

SILCA publishes its written warranty, including what it covers and what it excludes, at silca.cc/pages/silca-warranty-information. We will send you a free copy of that warranty on request. Email support@hammerandhowl.com or call (206) 420-9548.

What's included

  • One SILCA Pre-Waxed Race Chain, a genuine SRAM XX SL Eagle Transmission Flattop chain, hot-melt waxed with SILCA Secret Chain Blend and ready to install
  • One SRAM T-Type Eagle Flattop PowerLock connector, in the box with the chain

Not included: A chain tool or master-link pliers. The chain is waxed already, so do not degrease it before the first ride: the wax is the lubricant. You size the chain to your drivetrain with a chain tool, then join it with the SRAM T-Type Eagle Flattop PowerLock connector in the box. Taking the chain off later needs master-link pliers, and the PowerLock is single-use, so use a fresh one each time the chain is joined. Many home mechanics do this job, and if you would rather not, any bike shop can fit it for you. Tell them the chain is pre-waxed, so it must not be degreased or oiled.

Will it fit your bike?

Compatible with

  • SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed drivetrains: XX SL, XX, X0, GX, and Eagle 90 and Eagle 70 Transmission
  • Any SRAM Eagle Transmission tier (a chain from one tier works on another; the tiers differ by weight, pin construction, finish, and e-bike approval)

Not compatible with

  • SRAM Eagle 12-speed drivetrains that are not Transmission (NX, GX, X01 or XX1 Eagle and other hanger-mounted Eagle groups), which use a standard SRAM Eagle chain
  • SRAM 12-speed Flattop road drivetrains (RED, Force, Rival, or Apex eTap AXS), which use a road-specific Flattop chain that does not interchange
  • 11-speed, 10-speed and older drivetrains, and drivetrain systems from other manufacturers such as Shimano and Campagnolo
  • E-bike and e-MTB use: this is a lightweight race chain and SRAM does not approve it for e-bikes

Confirm before ordering

This is a pre-waxed SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed chain. If you are not sure whether your bike is Eagle Transmission, look for a rear derailleur that bolts on without a hanger. If you are still not sure, ask your bike mechanic or Hammer & Howl before ordering.

Eagle Transmission is SRAM's direct-mount 12-speed mountain-bike drivetrain, the one that bolts on without a derailleur hanger, and underneath the wax this is its Flattop chain.

The names are easy to confuse: X0 and XX Transmission are not X01 and XX1 Eagle, and GX Eagle Transmission is not GX Eagle.

Questions

Which drivetrains does it fit?

It fits SRAM Eagle Transmission (T-Type) 12-speed drivetrains: XX SL, XX, X0 and GX Transmission, and Eagle 90 and Eagle 70 Transmission. It does not fit hanger-mounted SRAM Eagle drivetrains such as NX, GX, X01 or XX1 Eagle, which use a standard Eagle chain. The SILCA chain for a hanger-mounted Eagle drivetrain is the SILCA Pre-Waxed Race Chain for SRAM XX1 Eagle 12-Speed, in a Rainbow oil-slick or Gold finish.

Can I use it on an e-bike or e-MTB?

No. Underneath the wax this is SRAM's XX SL Eagle Transmission chain. It is a lightweight race chain, and it is not e-bike approved. For an e-MTB, choose an e-bike approved Eagle Transmission chain instead, such as the SRAM GX Eagle Transmission Flattop Chain or the SRAM Eagle 70 Transmission Flattop Chain. Neither of those comes pre-waxed.

What does pre-waxed mean?

SILCA strips the factory grease off this genuine SRAM XX SL Eagle Transmission Flattop chain, ultrasonically cleans it, then hot-melt waxes it with SILCA Secret Chain Blend. It reaches you ready to install.

Do I need to clean or degrease it first?

No. Degreasing would remove the wax that lubricates the chain. Fit it exactly as it comes.

How long does the wax last, and how do I look after it?

The factory wax lasts 800 to 1,000 miles, but only if you top it up along the way. Plan on no more than that. Look after it in three steps. After every ride, wipe the chain down. Every 100 miles, top the wax up with a wax-based drip coating, and let it dry before you ride. Every 800 to 1,000 miles, strip the old wax off in boiling water and re-wax the chain. Re-wax sooner after wet, muddy or gritty riding, or if the chain feels or sounds dry. Hammer & Howl carries MSPEEDWAX Hot-Melt Chain Wax for the re-wax.

Does it come with a quick link?

Yes. One SRAM T-Type Eagle Flattop PowerLock connector is in the box. The PowerLock is single-use, so keep a fresh one on hand if you take the chain off again.
