Overview

MSPEEDWAX Race Powder is a dry powder you brush onto a chain that is already hot-melt waxed, as the last step before a race. It is a blend of molybdenum disulfide and tungsten disulfide, the same two solid lubricants that go into the hot-melt wax, in a 63 g jar. One jar prepares at least 20 chains.

It is an addition to waxing, not a replacement for it. It goes onto a freshly waxed chain that has already been ridden for a few minutes to settle the wax.

Why we love it

We love that it does one job. It is a race-day layer that goes on dry, over wax that is already on the chain.

  • 01It goes on dry, so there is nothing wet on the chain to pick up dust on a gritty start line.
  • 02One 63 g jar prepares at least 20 chains, so a jar covers a season of race days rather than a single event.
Why it makes the cut. Hammer & Howl only carries parts we believe are among the best in the business. This is a specialist's race-day product rather than a general-purpose additive, and it is made by the company that makes the wax it goes on top of.

Will it fit your bike?

Compatible with

  • Any chain that has already been hot-melt waxed
  • Every drivetrain brand and speed count, because this is not a fitment part

Not compatible with

  • Bare, unwaxed chains
  • Chains carrying a wet or drip lubricant. Race Powder is made to go on top of hot-melt wax, not on a lubricated chain.

Race Powder is topical. It goes onto the outside of a chain that already carries hot-melt wax.

Questions

Do I still need to wax the chain?

Yes. Race Powder goes on over hot-melt wax, and on a bare or oiled chain it has nothing to work with.

How do I put it on?

Start with a chain that is already waxed and has been ridden a few minutes to settle the wax. Brush the powder on in short sections, then backpedal to work it in and tap off the excess. It is a fine dry powder that marks what it lands on, so cover your floor, wear gloves and eye protection, and follow the application instructions in full.

Is it worth it for everyday riding?

No, not for everyday riding. It is made for racing. A well-waxed chain is already doing the work, and re-waxing when it starts to feel dry matters more.
